FELLOWS AND INTERNS
Educating the Clinicians of Tomorrow
Hudson Valley Hospice is proud to partner with hospitals, institutes, colleges and universities to help educate students in a variety of staff roles that will have an important impact on patients at the end-of-life.
Through our internship and fellowship programs, students, emerging clinicians, and physicians gain meaningful, hands-on experience caring for patients and families at one of life’s most important transitions. They learn that exceptional hospice care is more than managing symptoms, it is about listening deeply, honoring individual wishes, supporting families and preserving dignity, comfort and quality of life.
By sharing our expertise and welcoming the next generation of healthcare professionals into the hospice environment, we are helping shape clinicians who understand the value of whole-person care and the extraordinary difference compassion can make.
FELLOWSHIPS
Partnering with hospitals and healthcare organizations throughout the region, Hudson Valley Hospice provides fellowship and residency rotation opportunities that expand the clinical experience of healthcare professionals and deepen their understanding of exceptional end-of-life care.
Current Fellowship rotations of three-months are from the Vassar Brothers/Northwell Hospice and Palliative Care Fellowship.
Additionally, Residents in several programs rotate through Hudson Valley Hospice for three to nine months from the following programs;
- Northwell Health-Northern Dutchess Hospital – Geriatric Fellowship Program Rotation
- Northwell Health-Northern Dutchess Hospital – Family Medicine Program Residency Rotation
- Institute for Family Health – Mid-Hudson Family Medicine – Family Medicine Program Residency Rotation
During their rotations, physicians visit hospice patients and families in homes, nursing homes, hospitals and our Hospice House; work with patients of all ages and with a range of diagnoses (including dementia, COPD, cancer, heart disease, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke/TBI, among others); work both independently and within an interdisciplinary group (IDG); use appropriate treatment techniques based on developmental stages and clinical need; and, manage a patient case load as determined appropriate by the Supervisor.
INTERNSHIPS
Internships programs provide emerging healthcare professionals with the opportunity to learn alongside experienced hospice clinicians and gain meaningful, hands-on experience in end-of-life care.
Partnering with the following colleges and universities, we provide three to six month internships in several areas:
- Chamberlain University – Social Work Student Rotation
- University of Dayton – Music Therapy Student Internship
- Dutchess Community College – Nursing Student Rotation and Scholarships
- Keuka College – Nurse Practitioner Student Rotation
- Marist University – Physical Therapy Student Rotation
- Mount Saint Mary College – Nursing Student Rotation and Scholarship
- Ulster Community College – Nursing Student Rotation and Scholarship
- SUNY New Paltz – Music Therapy Student Internship
- Quinnipiac University – Master’s Level Social Work Rotation
- WEB WOC – Wound Care Rotation
These institutions are the sponsors and certifying programs for all students who rotate through Hudson Valley Hospice to gain the required or desired experience assisting patients during their final days of life. The achievements and rewards benefiting each student will be life enhancing.
Rotations can include, but are not limited to:
- Visiting hospice patients and families in homes, nursing homes, hospitals and Hospice House settings
- Working with patients of all ages and with a range of diagnoses (including dementia, COPD, cancer, heart disease, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke/TBI, among others)
- Documenting all clinical patient visits, phone calls, etc. in the electronic medical record (EMR)
- Working both independently and within an interdisciplinary group (IDG)
- Using appropriate treatment techniques based on developmental stages and clinical need
- Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing
- Handling time well and has good organizational skills
- Effectively managing an average case load as determined appropriate by the Internship Supervisor
- Having reliable transportation, valid driver’s license and proof of insurance
- Having the ability to carry up to twenty-five pounds of equipment and/or materials
Minimum Educational Requirements include:
- Completion of all prerequisite clinical education and training requirements
- Verification from Academic Advisor that applicant is eligible to begin the internship on chosen start date
